People First of Washington
We are people first,
our disabilities are secondary!
Reaching My Own Greatness
· An interactive educational teaching tool
focusing on self-determination · ·
- Our educational sessions are presented with a team of individuals-one
person with a disability and one to support. · Our team members have at
least 4 years of experience with the curriculum
- · Teams have done training with local chapters of People
First (groups of between 10-20) around the state of Washington. Spokane,
Clarkston, Yakima, Bellingham, Everett, greater Seattle area, Tacoma, Port
Angeles, Port Townsend, Grays Harbor, Lewis, Cowlitz County, and Clark County
People First.
- · We have used the complete RMOG train the trainer
curriculums with People First of Illinois (4 teams) and Arkansas (5 teams) to
assist them in using this tool with their local chapters. "This really works
for our members-people who weren't participating in our group are now speaking
up every meeting." "The advisor says it has helped her do her job better." Eric
Treet, Arkansas People First President.
- · We have presented overviews of self-determination at the
international TASH conference, a national Self-Advocates Becoming Empowered
convention, a statewide conference in Arkansas sponsored by the Arkansas
Developmental Disabilities Council, to the statewide Illinois People First
conference, to the Washington State Ellensburg Employment conference, and at
the People First of Washington annual convention. The size of these groups were
from 100 people to 450 at the Arkansas conference where we were keynote
speakers.
- · Reaching My Own Greatness has been shared with parents,
service providers, siblings, case managers, students with and without
disabilities, as well as with adults with developmental disabilities.
- · Self-determination is for all of us. We learn about our own
greatness-self-esteem, communication, having dreams and a plan to reach those
dreams, how to deal with "road blocks" when they occur in our plans, and how to
give back to our communities.
- · One of the priorities of the educational experience for
participants is that they will be encouraged to take a more active role in
planning and preparing for their future
.
Training conducted by a person with a disability and a person to support
